Beverwyck Breweries Inc.
Albany, NY (1878-1972)
Beverwyck Irish Cream Ale: In 1664, New Netherland fell to the English and Beverwyck, the New Netherland
name, was renamed "Albany." Various breweries had existed in “Beverwyck”, including Beverwyck Breweries. In
1950, the F.&M. Schaefer Brewing Co., based in Brooklyn, NY, bought Beverwyck Breweries, which had an annual
capacity of 1,100,000 barrels. But in 1972, Schaefer opened a modern brewing plant and closed older more costly
plants. Schaefer’s highest cost plant was the original Beverwyck Brewery in Albany, and on December 31, 1972 this
brewery was closed.
